Recovering a public ip address if it has not been reallocated yet ?

Hi,

A public ip address has been deleted by mistake.
If it has not been reallocated to another customer, is there a way to recover it ?

If a public IP address in Azure has been deleted, it cannot be recovered unless it has not yet been reallocated to another customer. Azure does not guarantee that a deleted IP will remain available for reuse.

Possible Steps to Recover or Reassign a Public IP

Check if the IP is Still Available

Go to Azure Portal > Public IP Addresses and search for the deleted IP.

If it appears unassigned, you may be able to recreate it manually.

Try Recreating the Public IP Resource

If the IP is still available, create a new Public IP resource with the same configuration.

Set the IP assignment to Static to prevent future accidental deletions.

Even if the portal says IP is unavailable, Microsoft Support may be able to help confirm whether the IP has been allocated or not.

Points to consider:

Dynamic IPs cannot be recovered once released.

Static IPs may be available for reassignment if they haven’t been allocated elsewhere.

Azure does not guarantee IP retention after deletion.

In the future, consider reserving important IP addresses to prevent accidental deletion. This can help you manage your public IPs better.

I'm not sure I'm following.
The "Public IP addresses" resource has been deleted.
I know what ipv4 was assigned, though when trying to create a new "Public IP addresses", there's nowhere to try to get a given ip.

When you're trying to recreate the public IP address manually with exact same IP that was deleted

If the IP has not been allocated to another customer, Azure will allow you to recreate it.

If it has been already reassigned, you'll get an error saying IP is unavailable.

If the IP is critical, Microsoft Support may be able to check its availability and assist in recovery. You need to open a support request via Azure portal.

Once a Public IP address resource is deleted in Azure, it is released back into the pool and may be reassigned to another customer. Unfortunately, Azure does not provide a way to manually reclaim a specific IP when creating a new Public IP resource.

Azure does not guarantee that the same IP will be available if you try to recreate it. However, here are some steps you can take:

Sometimes, deleted IPs remain unallocated for a short time. You can try to create a new public IP and may have the chance you get the same one.
Reserve static IPs in the future: If you need a stable IP, always create a static public IP instead of a dynamic one. This ensures the IP won’t change unless you manually delete it.

Hi Thibault,

If you delete public IP address you cannot recover it.

For the future, you may want to consider creating a Public IP Prefix. A prefix will provide a reserved range of public IP addresses that you can create your public IP addresses from. If you delete an individual public IP address resource that is associated with Prefix you could create it again and use same address again.

Note that once a prefix is created you are charged for all IP addresses in the range, whether you are using them or not. Pricing for prefix IP addresses is on IP Addresses pricing page.
