Guests Cannot See File Tab in Teams Browser

We use Teams to coordinate with a number of people outside our organization. We are using the New Teams for Education (24091.214.2846.1452.)

In a specific Team, we have different channels. On each channel, we keep documents for their reference (that is, they need to read the PDF, but not edit it). These are accessed through the Files"tab" located at the top of the screen.

If the guest already has Teams installed, they can use the app and find tab and relevant documents easily. (In a couple of situations, they've reinstalled Teams at the suggestion of a MS tech, but no issues since.)

However, we have learned that our guests who do not have the app installed cannot see the Files tab if they are using the browser version. It only shows Posts. This seems to be new in the last year (since the change to New Teams?).

Again, if they install the app, there is no issue.

This says to me it's not a permission issue as they can access it if they have the app.

Because these guests only use it for a short period of time, some are reluctant to install another app, so browser access would be ideal, especially if they're using a mobile device. Is this not the way Teams should work?

    Hello **** Mark

It appears that you are experiencing an issue where guest users cannot see the “Files” tab in Microsoft Teams when using the browser version.

Please note when guests access Teams through a web browser, they might encounter limitations compared to using the Teams desktop

or mobile app.  One such limitation is the visibility of certain tabs, including the “Files” tab.

If guests do not have the Teams app installed, they may only see the “Posts” tab and not the “Files” tab in the channel.

However, there is a work around. To make shared files accessible to guests via the browser, you can create a custom

tab using the “Website” app. Here’s how:

1.Click on the “+” icon at the top of the channel.

2.Select “Website” from the list of apps (you can use the search bar to find it quickly).

3.Give your tab a name (e.g., “Shared Files”) and paste the SharePoint link to your folder.

    4.Click “Save.”

5.Now, this tab will be visible to all team members, including guests, who can access it anytime they want

Remember that guests who have the Teams app installed will have a more comprehensive experience, but creating a custom tab with the

“Website” app should help address the browser-specific limitation for guests.

If you need any further assistance, please feel free to post back. we will be happy to assist you.

    Sincerely,

    Bertrand

    Thank you for reply.

We have not had an issue since I sent in my initial query, so we have not attempted to use this. However, we will try it if this happens again.

I'll post results here when we do.

    Mark
