    Hello Laurie Jensen,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Q&A Forum.

From your description, I can understand that your Microsoft Word on Mac is stuck at the "Creating license" step.

Here are some steps that you can kindly take:

    1. Run License Removal Tool for Mac to clear any corrupted license/activation entries.
    2. Clear old credentials / keychain entries:
    • Open Keychain Access and delete any entries with "Microsoft", "Office", "365" etc.
    • Also delete certain folders under ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office - which hold old license info.
    1. Move Office apps to the standard Applications folder if they are not already there.
    2. Restart your Mac, then open and Office app and attempt to sign in again.
    3. If you had the software already installed previously under a different license or account, check your Microsoft account's "Devices" or "Installations" section and remove any old device if allowed. Then try again.

I hope it helps, please feel free to let me know if you need any further assistance.
