Today received a message from Microsoft 365 Defender that my account was being hacked! Called the phone # (dumb) and spoke to a person, suspicious who wanted me to download an app to share my screen using my iPad. He hung up and I did not download.

Then went to live.com and launched it on my iPhone and iPad, but keep receiving a message, "Invitation redemption faIled. An error has occurred. Please try again later."

I am able to use my Excel and Word and get into my account but am troubled what to do to fix the above.

The "Invitation redemption failed" error message you are encountering when trying to launch the app may be related to issues with your account or the specific app you are trying to access. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue:

    1. Check Your Account Status: Since you received a message about your account being hacked, ensure that your account is secure. Change your password and enable two-factor authentication if you haven't already.
    2. Clear Cache and Cookies: Sometimes, clearing the cache and cookies on your browser or app can resolve issues related to account access.
    3. Try a Different Device: If possible, try accessing the app from a different device or browser to see if the issue persists.
    4. Check Service Health: Visit the Microsoft 365 service health page to see if there are any ongoing issues that might be affecting your account access.
    5. Contact Support: If the problem continues, consider reaching out to Microsoft support for assistance. They can provide more specific guidance based on your account and the error message.

Since you mentioned you can still access Excel and Word, it seems that your account is functional to some extent, but it’s important to ensure that everything is secure and functioning correctly.

    Hi Jeffrey,

The message from Microsoft 365 Defender was likely legitimate, but the phone number you called was part of a tech support scam. These scams often trick users into installing remote access tools.

The error “Invitation redemption failed” usually appears when:

A shared resource or organization invite is expired or invalid.

A security alert or conditional access policy temporarily blocks certain actions.

Even though you can still use Excel, Word, and access your account, the error suggests there’s an incomplete or failed security process tied to your account.

    What You Can Do is:

    Secure Your Account Immediately

    Go to https://account.microsoft.com/security .

Change your password to a strong, unique one.

    Enable two-factor authentication (2FA).

    Check Recent Activity

Review sign-in history for suspicious logins.

    Remove any unknown devices.

Ignore the Invitation Error for Now

It often relates to a failed organization or shared resource invite.

If you don’t need it, you can safely ignore it.

    Run a Full Device Scan

Use Microsoft Defender or another trusted antivirus to ensure your devices are clean.

    Report the Scam

Forward details to Microsoft Report a Scam.

Let me know how it goes, Happy to help!
