Sooo... I recently got Minecraft for my PC, but I can't play multiplayer. I am in a Microsoft Family, and the settings don't permit it, but my Family Organizer does not know how to change it. I know it is not Xbox settings. (btw I put Microsoft Security because I didn't know which one applied to my situation) I used AI to ask for help, but it just said something about Content Restrictions. Please help me. Also please tell me what tags and child tags are, I just picked random ones. Screenshot 2025-11-21 202520

To enable multiplayer, you can tell your Family Organizer to follow these steps:

As the family organizer, sign in with the adult Microsoft account at https://account.xbox.com/settings
At the top of the page, click the Gamertag dropdown and select the child’s profile.
You will see two main tabs. Choose the tab labeled Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11 devices Online Safety.
Scroll down until you find these three options and set each one to Allow:
- "You can join multiplayer games"
- "You can play with people outside of Xbox Live"
- "You can create and join clubs"
Save the changes.

Afterwards, completely close the Minecraft Launcher and restart it. Multiplayer will now be enabled in Minecraft — usually within a few minutes.

The settings you said needed to be changed were all set to allow, so I know it's something else.

Hi Levi, thanks for the follow up. It seems like the issue is a local token/cache sync problem. You can follow these steps:

Install or open the Xbox app on your PC via the Microsoft Store, if not already present.

Sign in with your Microsoft account in the Xbox app, then switch to the Minecraft Launcher and ensure the same account is signed in.

Sign out of both the Xbox app and Minecraft Launcher immediately after confirming the sign-in.

Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Navigate to the Processes tab, locate and end any tasks named “Minecraft Launcher” or “Gaming Services," (right-click and select End task).

Restart the PC.

Launch the Minecraft Launcher and sign in again with your Microsoft account.

and what if the family organizer's account isnt accessible? i have this issue

Hello lemons,

If the family organizer’s account isn’t accessible, unfortunately there's no way to move a child account out of a "dead" family group if the organizer's gone.

You have a few options:

Recover that account through Microsoft’s account recovery process (https://account.live.com/acsr)

Contact Microsoft Support and request an age correction. This would require identity verification, so it only works if the child account holder is actually an adult and the birthdate was set incorrectly.

Create a fresh Microsoft account and buy Minecraft again under that account.

Sorry I haven't responded, I tried what you suggested following the instructions exactly, yet it didn't work. Do you have any other ideas? I think it has to do with Minecraft being allowed because it's age rating is lower than my allowed age rating, but multiplayer is rated higher somehow, so my Family Organizer would have to change my age rating to 18+, which he does not want to do. Is there a way that it can be changed for just Minecraft?

Hello, thanks for the follow-up.

I understand, but Multiplayer isn’t rated higher than the base game—the ESRB rating for Minecraft stays E10+. The restriction comes from Microsoft Family Safety rules: online interactions (like multiplayer) are considered higher-risk and require extra permissions. That’s why enabling multiplayer often needs the organizer to allow “Join multiplayer games” and related settings, and in some cases raise the age limit globally. There’s no way to allow multiplayer for just Minecraft without changing the overall age setting.

Unfortunately, at this point I can't think of any other possibly causes. The only explanation left is a server-side account issue, and you would need to open a ticket at support.xbox.com so they can take a look at your accounts setting.

Do you think it's because the rating for games I can download/play is lower than Minecraft multiplayer's rating? I can play games rated 13+, and Minecraft might need a higher rating to do multiplayer.

Unfortunately, I don’t think so — it’s all in the toggle. Multiplayer isn’t rated higher; the restriction comes from Family Safety settings. The organizer just needs to enable “Join multiplayer games". There’s no separate rating for multiplayer, and there’s no way to change it just for Minecraft.
