Export data

One of my users wants to extract Teams chat/channel messages as raw data so they can analyze it.

They would also like to know if it is possible to set up a recurring data connection/feed of Teams channel messages for ongoing data consumption and reporting.

These are the two chats/channels they are looking to analyze:

Chat:

Channel (Tech Support):

Could you please advise on the options available to export these logs and whether a recurring data feed can be configured?

To export Teams chat and channel messages, you can use the Teams data export tool or the Teams Export APIs. The Teams data export tool allows you to export the following data:

    1. 1:1 chats
    2. Group chats
    3. Meeting chats
    4. Channel messages

You can initiate the export directly from the Teams admin center, and it supports exporting the structure of teams and channels, user rosters, and installed apps as well. However, it's important to note that any new data created during or after the export will not be included, so you may need to perform another export within 90 days to capture that data.

For ongoing data consumption and reporting, you can set up a recurring data connection using the Teams Export APIs. These APIs allow you to programmatically access and export messages, including direct messages, group messages, and channel posts. However, please be aware that some of these APIs may be metered and could incur costs.

    To summarize:

    • Exporting Data: Use the Teams data export tool or the Teams Export APIs.
    • Recurring Data Feed: Set up using the Teams Export APIs for ongoing access to channel messages.

For more detailed steps on accessing these tools, refer to the documentation provided by Microsoft.

    Hi @Rising Flight,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for contacting us. I would like to provide you with the following information:

You can use the Teams Export API to support data extraction from Teams and set up Power Automate to create an automated flow. This ensures accurate, fast, and system-appropriate configuration.

After creating a support ticket via Microsoft 365 Admin Center, a Microsoft Live Agent will proactively reach out and guide you step by step to configure the device.

Steps to create a support ticket:

    1. Go to https://admin.microsoft.com
    2. Click Help and Support User's image
    3. Enter the title: Support automatic setup for extracting data from Teams User's image
    4. Click the blue arrow and select Contact Support
    5. Choose your preferred contact method User's image
