To move a file in a shared file environment like Microsoft 365 or SharePoint, you can use the following methods:

    1. Using SharePoint: You can move files between document libraries or folders within SharePoint by selecting the file, clicking on the "Move to" option, and then choosing the destination folder or library.
    2. Using Microsoft Teams: If your files are stored in Teams, navigate to the Files tab, select the file you want to move, and use the "Move" option to select the new location.
    3. Using OneDrive: If your files are in OneDrive, you can select the file, click on "Move to," and choose the destination folder within your OneDrive or another shared location.

These methods allow you to efficiently manage and organize files across different areas in a shared environment.

    Dear @Daniels Kim

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand you’re trying to move a file between different areas in a shared SharePoint location.

To help me better understand the situation and assist you effectively, could you please share a few details such as:

1/ Is the file stored in SharePoint (site/library) or OneDrive for business?

2/ Are you moving within the same library, between libraries on the same site, or across different sites?

3/ Is the file checked out, locked, or currently opened by someone?

4/ Do you have Contribute or Edit permissions in both the source and target locations?

5/ What exact error message or behavior do you see? (If possible, please share a screenshot. Make sure to blur or hide any personal or sensitive information to protect your privacy.)

6/ Does the issue happen for all files or only specific files?

This will help us better understand the context and provide more targeted support. Any additional information will help us better understand and support you.

Please see the following workarounds that will help you verify the issue:

    • Option 1: Use “Move to” in SharePoint

Navigate to the document library where the file is located.

Select the file, click Move to, and choose the destination folder.

This feature allows you to move files or folders from one folder to another within the same document library, or even across different libraries within the same site (and across sites if permissions allow).

(Optional) To move files or folders to other sites or libraries, you can pin frequently used sites to Quick Access for easier access:

    Go to the target library.

Click Pin to Quick Access in the toolbar.

    User's image

Once pinned, the library will appear under Quick Access in the Move to dialog. This makes it easier to select the destination site or library when moving files.

If the destination site isn’t listed, select “More places” at the bottom of the site list to find the site you need.

    • Option 2: Use OneDrive Sync to enable drag-and-drop

You’ll need to download the OneDrive app and sign in with your work or school account before completing these steps:

When you add or delete files in this OneDrive, the changes will be reflected on your SharePoint site.    User's image

Enable syncing of your source and destination libraries via the OneDrive client:

    Click Sync on both libraries.

    User's image

They will appear in File Explorer.

Drag and drop files directly between them.

This method will copy the file to the other site, after which you can delete it from its original location.

    Dear @Daniels Kim,

Thank you again for reaching out and for keeping me updated on your situation.

Could you please check if, when you click on the three dots next to the file or folder, the Move to or Copy to options appear?

    User's image

To use the Move to option:

    • You’ll need at least Edit permissions (or higher, such as Site Owner) for both the source and destination locations.
    • If the file has retention labels applied or the library has specific settings (e.g., required check-out enabled), the Move to option may not be available.

If you see Copy to, you can use that as a workaround and then delete the original file or folder afterward.

Please let me know what you find, and I’ll be happy to assist further if needed.

Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation.
