Visual Studio 2026 usually locks up when opened

I've been using the Insiders version for a while without any issues but since installing the release version it locks up when I start it and I have to start Task Manager to shut it down. If I run it again it's usually OK. I tried uninstalling it and re-downloading it but it's still doing it.

Also it did not install a shortcut, I had to find c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\18\Community\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe and make my own.

If Visual Studio 2026 is locking up when opened, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Check for Updates: Ensure that you have the latest updates for Visual Studio 2026. Sometimes, bugs are fixed in newer releases.
    2. Reset User Settings: You can try resetting your Visual Studio user settings. This can be done by running the command devenv.exe /resetuserdata from the command line.
    3. Run as Administrator: Try running Visual Studio as an administrator. Right-click on the devenv.exe file and select "Run as administrator."
    4. Disable Extensions: If you have any extensions installed, they might be causing the issue. You can start Visual Studio in safe mode by running devenv.exe /SafeMode to see if the problem persists.
    5. Check for Corrupted Installation: Since you mentioned uninstalling and reinstalling, ensure that all remnants of the previous installation are removed before reinstalling. You can use the Visual Studio Installer to repair the installation as well.
    6. Event Viewer: Check the Windows Event Viewer for any errors related to Visual Studio that might give more insight into what’s causing the lock-up.

Regarding the missing shortcut, it’s not uncommon for shortcuts to not be created during installation. You can create your own shortcut to devenv.exe as you have done, or try reinstalling Visual Studio and ensuring that all installation options are selected correctly.

If the issue persists after trying these steps, you may want to report the problem through the Visual Studio feedback tool to get further assistance from Microsoft.
