Fixing OneDrive path & hard drive vs onedrive

How do I clean up my OneDrive folders when the file path looks like this: "C:\Users\Mary\OneDrive\Pictures\Documents\New folder\OneDrive\flight.jpg"

Clearly, I'm in OneDrive within OneDrive and I cannot figure out how to move everything (quickly? easily? cleanly?) into the C:\Users\Mary\onedrive.

Also, how do I tell what is actually on my computer's hard drive and what is only on OneDrive when it looks like the OneDrive is on the C:? I am considering a factory reset on my laptop but I can't confirm my stuff is in OneDrive.

Thanks in advance for any help.

To clean up your OneDrive folders and ensure that your files are organized correctly, follow these steps:

    1. Move Files to the Correct OneDrive Folder:
      • Open File Explorer and navigate to the path where your files are currently located (e.g., C:\Users\Mary\OneDrive\Pictures\Documents\New folder\OneDrive).
      • Select the files you want to move (e.g., flight.jpg) and cut them (right-click and select Cut or press Ctrl + X).
      • Navigate to the correct OneDrive folder (C:\Users\Mary\OneDrive) and paste the files there (right-click and select Paste or press Ctrl + V).
      • You can also create subfolders within the main OneDrive folder if you want to organize your files further.
    2. Check What Is Stored Locally vs. OneDrive:
      • OneDrive Files On-Demand allows you to see all your files in File Explorer, but not all files are necessarily downloaded to your device. Files that are only in the cloud will have a cloud icon next to them, while files that are downloaded will show a green checkmark.
      • To check the status of your files:
        • Open File Explorer and go to your OneDrive folder.
        • Look for the icons next to your files to determine if they are stored locally or only in OneDrive.
      • If you want to ensure that specific files are available offline, right-click the file and select Always keep on this device.
    3. Backup Your Data:
      • Before considering a factory reset, make sure all important files are backed up. You can do this by ensuring they are properly synced to OneDrive. Check the OneDrive icon in the taskbar to confirm that it shows an "Up to date" status.
      • You can also manually upload important files to OneDrive through the web interface to ensure they are saved in the cloud.

By following these steps, you can clean up your OneDrive folders and confirm what is stored on your computer versus what is only in OneDrive.

Hi, I'm Rodrigo and I will help you.
First, let's check how the OneDrive path is set on your computer.
Right-click the OneDrive icon on the right side of the taskbar > Settings > Account > Choose Folders.
What is the path shown at the bottom of the window?

About the files saved to OneDrive, if the file shows the cloud icon, it is only on OneDrive, if it shows the green checkmark, it is on OneDrive and PC, if it shows the blue circle arrows, it is syncing the files at the moment.

To understand if your files are synced or not, open the OneDrive folder, this window on the image I sent you above will not show your synced files. If you are checking any other folder that doesn't show the OneDrive status on the files, means that the file is on your local storage only.

The image Is just to help you locate the OneDrive path, to change it you need to unlink your OneDrive account and set it again to change the folder location.
To remove it, go to OneDrive Settings > Account > Unlink this PC > Unlink account. Then, set your account again by opening the OneDrive application.

After entering your account and password, select this option to set the OneDrive folder location, if needed, change it.

As you changed the location of the OneDrive folder as instructed, the older folder will not be deleted. If it is inside your current OneDrive folder, you are probably using double of the storage.

If you are not sure, you can move the old folder to another location on your computer to ensure it will not affect your current OneDrive folder.
