Hello Enormous, I am Ivy
Thank you for contacting us regarding the issue with your Dell system after the factory reset. The missing system32.sys file indicates that the recovery process did not complete successfully or system files were corrupted during the reset.
Recommended Steps to Resolve
Your Dell system is failing to boot because critical files (e.g., system32.sys) were lost during the reset. To restore functionality:
Step 1: Attempt Repair from Windows Recovery
- Boot from a Windows installation DVD or USB.
- At the first setup screen, press Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt.
- Run:
Confirm the correct Windows drive letter.diskpart list vol exit - Repair system files:
DISM /Image:drive letter /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:path to install.wim /LimitAccess sfc /scannow /offbootdir=drive letter\ /offwindir=drive letter\Windows
Replace drive letter with your Windows drive letter.
Step 2: Create a Fresh WinPE USB
If repairs fail:
- On a working PC, install Windows ADK (including WinPE add-on). (Link)
- Open Deployment and Imaging Tools Environment (Admin).
- Run:
(Replace F: with your USB drive letter.)copype amd64 C:\WinPE_amd64 Dism /Mount-Image /ImageFile:C:\WinPE_amd64\media\sources\boot.wim /index:1 /MountDir:C:\WinPE_amd64\mount (Optional) Dism /Add-Driver /Image:C:\WinPE_amd64\mount /Driver:<path to drivers> Dism /Unmount-Image /MountDir:C:\WinPE_amd64\mount /commit MakeWinPEMedia /UFD C:\WinPE_amd64 F: - Boot the Dell PC from this USB. For older models, if USB boot fails, create a WinPE CD/DVD (ADK supports ISO creation) and set BIOS to boot from CD first.
Step 3: Restore Recovery Environment
After repairs, run:
reagentc /enable
to re-enable Windows Recovery.
