new laptop is not allowing me administration rights

Recently set up my new Lenovo P1 Gen 7 ThinkPad. Set me up as the administrator but it keeps prompting me to sign in as Administrator and locks up when password is entered. Tried to change account type but same pop up appears and locks up.

It sounds like you are experiencing issues with your administrator account on your new Lenovo P1 Gen 7 ThinkPad. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:

    1. Safe Mode: Boot your laptop into Safe Mode. This can sometimes bypass issues with the user interface and allow you to access the Administrator account without prompts.
    2. Built-in Administrator Account: If you cannot access your account, you may need to enable the built-in Administrator account. You can do this by running the following command in Command Prompt (with administrative privileges):
         net user administrator /active:yes

After enabling it, restart your laptop and try logging in with the built-in Administrator account.
    3. User Account Control Settings: Check your User Account Control (UAC) settings. Sometimes, UAC can interfere with administrative tasks. You can adjust these settings in the Control Panel under User Accounts.
    4. System Restore: If the problem persists, consider performing a system restore to a point when the laptop was functioning correctly.
    5. Contact Support: If none of the above solutions work, it may be best to contact Lenovo support or Microsoft support for further assistance.

These steps should help you regain access to your administrative rights on your laptop.

    Dear Greg Hanson

Based on your description, i think it seems the system may be attempting to authenticate against the built-in Administrator account rather than your primary user profile. This often happens when the built-in Administrator account is enabled but has no valid password or becomes corrupted during initial setup. To resolve this, I recommend first booting the device into Safe Mode with Networking and confirming whether your main account loads without the Administrator prompt. If it does, please disable the built-in Administrator account using an elevated Command Prompt (net user administrator /active:no). If the issue persists, try creating a new local admin account through Settings > Accounts > Other users and test whether the system still locks up. In some cases, a Lenovo pre-installation issue may cause credential conflicts, so installing the latest Lenovo firmware and Windows updates can also help. Additionally, please check whether any third-party security tools were automatically installed, as these may interfere with credential policies.
