Cannot get Teams to install after it broke

Teams broke by itself for a couple of users on our Windows 2022 Terminal Server in true and typical awful Microsoft software style. Now I cannot get it to install.

If I try to install via the bootstrapper, the app appears, in the Start menu but then nothing happens when it is clicked.

If I double click on the MSTeamsSetup.exe a splash screen appears saying it is "Downloading Microsoft Teams", then it comes up with a message "You'll need a new app to open this msteams link", and an OK button which doesn't work, so I clear the message by pressing escape.

Can Microsoft provide software that installs and doesn't crash please? No idea what to do to fix this as no help available anywhere.

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with installing Microsoft Teams on your Windows 2022 Terminal Server. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the installation issues:

    1. Check for Group Policy Restrictions: Ensure that there are no Group Policy settings that prevent the installation of packaged Windows apps. You can check this by opening the Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) and navigating to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > App package Deployment. Look for the following settings:
      • Prevent non-admin users from installing packaged Windows apps
      • Allow all trusted apps to install Make sure these settings are set to Not configured.
    2. Run the Pre-installation Check Script: Microsoft provides a pre-installation check script that can help identify potential issues before installing Teams. Running this script may highlight any configuration problems that need to be addressed.
    3. Registry Keys: There are specific registry keys that could block the installation of the new Teams client. Check the following keys:
      • BlockNonAdminUserInstall
      • AllowAllTrustedApps
      • AllowDevelopmentWithoutDevLicense If AllowAllTrustedApps is disabled, the installation will fail. You can find these keys at:
      • Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppModelUnlock
      • Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Appx
    4. Install in Default Location: Ensure that Teams is being installed in the default location (user\Appdata). If a custom installation path is used, it may lead to issues with updates and functionality.
    5. Check for Pending Windows Updates: Ensure that your system is fully updated, including any pending Windows updates, as these can sometimes resolve installation issues.

If you continue to experience problems after trying these steps, consider reaching out to Microsoft Customer Service for further assistance.

    Hello Robert Lane,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing the details of the issue you’re experiencing with Microsoft Teams on your Windows Server 2022 Terminal Server. The behavior you described—Teams appearing in the Start menu but not launching, and the “You'll need a new app to open this msteams link” message—typically occurs when remnants of a previous Teams installation remain on the system or when the per‑user installation conflicts with multi‑session environments. To resolve this, I recommend fully removing all existing Teams components using the Teams Cleanup Tool or by manually deleting the Teams folders under both ProgramData and each user’s AppData directory. After cleanup, please install Teams for VDI rather than the standard desktop installer, as this version is specifically designed for Windows Server and multi‑user environments.

Once installed, ensure that FSLogix or your profile management solution is not blocking Teams’ cache or registry paths. A server reboot after cleanup often helps finalize the reset.

I hope these steps help you restore Teams functionality on your terminal server. If this guidance resolves your issue, please consider clicking “Accept the Answer” so that other community members can benefit from the solution as well.

    Thank you so much!!

    Best regards,

    QQ.

No joy sorry. I said in the original post I'd installed teams via the bootstrapper. Afterwards the icon is in the start menu but it does nothing when it is [left] clicked. If you right-click it all of the usual teams options are there (Available, Busy, Do not disturb etc)

Can you provide a link to the Teams Cleanup Tool?
