Not enough storage to copy files to Personal Vault

I am using OneDrive. I am not a paid subscriber. My usage is a small fraction of the storage available to free users.

Today, I copied a folder into the Personal Vault. That worked fine. Then I copied another folder there. This time I got an error.

Not enough storage available

I've read suggestions that this is because Personal Vault is further limited for free users. If this is the case, this is incredibly stupid! The only possible reason for Microsoft to do this would be to encourage users to sign up and start paying. But if there is no hint that this is the reason for the error, and even digging around for 20 minutes still does not make it clear that the issue would go away if I start paying, then it serves no possible purpose at all! (Except maybe to get people thinking there is something broken with the service.)

Does anyone know what I'm missing here?

The error message you are encountering regarding insufficient storage when copying files to Personal Vault in OneDrive is likely due to the limitations imposed on free users. While free OneDrive accounts have a certain amount of storage, the Personal Vault feature has additional restrictions that may not be clearly communicated.

For free users, the Personal Vault is designed to provide an extra layer of security for sensitive files, but it may have a lower storage limit compared to the overall OneDrive storage available to you. This can lead to situations where you can copy some files to the Personal Vault but encounter errors when trying to add more, especially if you are approaching the limit set for that specific feature.

If you require more storage for your Personal Vault, you might consider upgrading to a paid subscription, which would typically increase your storage limits and potentially remove these restrictions. However, it's understandable that the lack of clear communication regarding these limitations can be frustrating.
