I own a valid windows 11 pro license key. I still have the original receipt and invoice. It is valid and has always been valid. All of a sudden my PC now says it can no longer activate windows 11 pro. I go through the settings and the process. Re-apply the valid key. Still doesnt work. Go through more troubleshooting. Recently I have been having some motherboard/gpu issues, maybe that it. I troubleshoot until I reach the screen which asks if I had hardware issues. I select the correct option saying yes and which it also CORRECTLY recognizes my valid windows 11 pro license attached to myu account for this specirfic computer. I select yes, I am currently using. End result. Windows still is not activated and microsoft wants me to PAY AGAIN for my windows 11 pro subscription.

I already ditched windows 11 for software development years ago due to an ecosystem in decline. But I still do require windows 11 at times and I REQUIRE my valid paid for with proof of purchase from valid retailer to work and activate. Microsoft no longer has any customer help for windows activation. I can contact no one nor call anyone. Everything says to go to microsoft website and everything tells me to rebuy a valid windows 11 professional license that I ALREADY OWN.

Curious if anyone knows how to handle this? This is not an issue I believe where there is just some setting and config I can modify. This is centrally an issue with microsoft servers. How the hell does one talk to anyone at microsoft anymore? They are business with no public facing reps. wth....?

    Hello Mark,

Thank you for sharing the details about your activation issue I appreciate the effort you put into explaining the situation. I completely understand how frustrating it is to have a valid Windows 11 Pro license suddenly stop working especially when you’ve invested in it and can’t seem to reach anyone at Microsoft for help.

Experiencing hardware problems like a motherboard or GPU failure and then running into activation errors can feel overwhelming you shouldn’t have to pay again when you have proof of purchase from a trusted retailer.

When major hardware changes occur such as replacing the motherboard Windows often interprets this as a new device and may disable activation until it’s reverified. The system needs to confirm that your license is linked to your Microsoft account and that this is the same PC after the hardware change. You’ve already taken the right step by using the Activation Troubleshooter and selecting the option for hardware changes. The next thing to check is whether your Windows license is linked to your Microsoft account. In Settings select System select Activation it should say “activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.” If it’s not linked sign in with your Microsoft account as an administrator and then run the Activation Troubleshooter again choosing the hardware change option and confirming “This is the device I’m using now.”

If activation still doesn’t work try entering your Windows 11 Pro product key manually under Settings select System select Activation select Change product key, especially if your key is retail and transferable. Keep in mind that OEM keys may not transfer and could be tied to your original motherboard.

Could you confirm whether your license is retail or OEM and let me know if you’ve tried re-entering the key manually after the hardware swap?

I hope this answer is helpful if you have further questions feel free to reply back

    Regards,

    Marcelo

If your Windows 11 Pro license key is valid but you're experiencing activation issues, there are a few steps you can take:

    1. Check for Hardware Changes: If you've recently changed your motherboard or GPU, Windows may require reactivation. Ensure that the hardware changes are recognized by Windows.
    2. Use the Activation Troubleshooter: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation and use the Activation Troubleshooter. This can help resolve common activation issues.
    3. Verify Internet Connection: Ensure that your device is connected to the internet, as activation requires a connection to Microsoft servers.
    4. Check for Windows Updates: Sometimes, pending updates can interfere with activation. Make sure your Windows is fully updated.
    5. Contact Microsoft Support: While it may seem challenging to reach Microsoft support, you can try using the Get Help app in Windows or visit the Microsoft support website for assistance with activation issues. They may provide options for contacting support directly.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, it may be necessary to escalate the matter through official Microsoft support channels, as they can assist with account-specific issues related to your activation key.
