Why/What is Edge copilot sidebar uploading every time I type?

I use netbalncer to monitor my internet traffic, and I realized every time I type a sentence on edge's copilot sidebar, it uploads something to the internet.

I know simple sentence would hardly reach 1KB, but I'm uploading megabytes sometimes. The amount it uploads is proportional to the size of the sentence, the more I type the more it uploads. The same thing doesn't happen on Window's Copilot app.

I've reinstalled the windows and the problem persist.

I want to know if anyone is having the same problem, is this a bug or some hidden feature?

Thank you.

The behavior you're observing with the Edge Copilot sidebar uploading data as you type could be related to how the Copilot feature operates. When you interact with Copilot, it may be sending your input to the server for processing in order to generate responses or suggestions. This process can involve uploading not just the text you type but also additional context and data necessary for the AI to provide relevant outputs.

The amount of data uploaded may vary based on the complexity of your input and the features being utilized. If you're experiencing significantly larger uploads compared to what you expect, it might be worth checking if there are any settings related to data sharing or feedback that could be influencing this behavior.

Since you mentioned that this issue does not occur with the Windows Copilot app, it may indicate a difference in how data is handled between the two applications. If the problem persists and seems abnormal, it could be beneficial to report it to Microsoft for further investigation, as it may be a bug or unintended behavior in the Edge browser's implementation of Copilot.

Hi! Edge’s Copilot sidebar isn’t just uploading the text you type: it also often sends extra context like the current page’s URL/title, parts of the page content, and sometimes additional telemetry/diagnostic data, so a single prompt can easily reach megabytes even if the sentence itself is tiny; this behavior is specific to the Edge integration (which is tightly tied to the browser and page) and that’s why you don’t see the same upload pattern with the standalone Windows Copilot app, so it’s more a “by design” behavior than a known bug, though you can reduce it by turning off Copilot’s access to page content and optional diagnostic data in Edge’s privacy/settings.
