Hello All,

We are using Exchange 2019 in Hybrid mode configured with O365. We are able to migrate the mailboxes successfully however facing error while migrating a mailbox of Primary mailbox size 49 GB and Archive mailbox size around 172 GB from on-prem Exchange to Office 365. We have assigned Office 365 E3 License to this user and also enabled auto-expanding archiving at Organization level in Office 365 at the beginning of the migration that is before we created migration batch for this user.

Below is the error we are getting.

Error: UpdateMovedMailboxPermanentException: An error occurred while updating a user object after the move operation. -- Either the primary or the archive mailbox exceeds the allowed quota. Primary Mailbox [Size: '48.72 GB (52,315,407,707 bytes)', Quota: '100 GB (107,374,182,400 bytes)']. Archive Mailbox [Size: '171.8 GB (180,141,346,861 bytes)', Quota: '100 GB (107,374,182,400 bytes)'].

Any suggestions are welcome !!

    Hi @Sudhirbidye,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A, and thank you so much for reaching out to us.

Please note that, as a Microsoft Q&A moderator, I don’t have access to your specific environment, and my testing capabilities are limited. So my assistance is based solely on publicly available documentation and resources. That said, I’ll do my best to help you as much as possible.

Based on your description, you mention that you’ve already enabled auto‑expanding archiving at the organization level. From my research, if you enable it recently, please kindly note that additional archive storage from Auto‑Expanding Archiving is not provisioned immediately. According to Microsoft documentation, it can take up to 30 days before the extra auto‑expanded archive space becomes available.

If you can’t wait for the auto‑expanding archive storage to finish provisioning, I recommend opening a support ticket with the Microsoft Support Team through Admin Center. They have specialized tools that can assist with archive‑quota issues and help move your migration forward when the archive exceeds standard limits.

I am sorry for needing to refer you to another team, but this is the fastest and most effective path to getting your request resolved.

    Thank you for your understanding.
