How do I get out of Windows 11 S Mode

I recently purchased a new Lenovo Ideapad with Windows 11 Home in S mode. I need to download additional software which is not available in the Microsoft Store so I need to switch out of S Mode. I have tried going through Settings/System/Activation/S Mode, which takes me to the Microsoft Store on a page to download the Switch out of S Mode. When I click "Get", just says Try again with the note that "Something happened and we couldn't start the upgrade".

I have tried troubleshooting by changing networks, verifying all Windows updates have been completed, updating Windows Store, and turning off Windows Defender (firewall and virus) with no changes. I've tried restarting after each of these steps as well.

Can someone please help?

To switch out of Windows 11 S Mode, you typically need to go through the Microsoft Store. Since you are encountering issues with the upgrade process, here are some steps you can try:

    1. Check Your Internet Connection: Ensure that you have a stable internet connection, as this is necessary for the upgrade process.
    2. Use the Settings App: Go to Settings > System > Activation. Here, you should see an option to switch out of S Mode. Click on the link that directs you to the Microsoft Store.
    3. Try Again Later: Sometimes, the Microsoft Store may experience temporary issues. Wait for a while and try the process again.
    4. Check for Windows Updates: Make sure your Windows is fully updated. Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates.
    5. Create a New User Account: If the problem persists, try creating a new user account and attempt the switch from there.
    6. Contact Microsoft Support: If none of the above solutions work, it may be best to contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.

Please note that once you switch out of S Mode, you cannot revert back to it. Make sure that you really want to make this change before proceeding.

    Hi, good day!

    • Can you check if your date and time are set correctly?

Please let me know if you have tried the method below.

    • Make sure your account is not connected to school/work.
    • Make sure to install all available and pending windows updates for your device.
    • Reset the Microsoft Store cache Press the Windows Logo Key + R to open the Run dialog box, type wsreset.exe and then select OK. Note: A blank Command Prompt window will open, and after about ten seconds the window will close, and Microsoft Store will open automatically.

After that, please check the support article in the link below on How to Switch out of S mode.
