Why can't I no longer print attachments from outlook.live.com emails without downloading first? This has been a very recent change.
The same options pops up "Download / Print / Save to OneDrive", as they always did before. But recently the "Print" button became in active and you have to either "Download or Save" in order to print attachments. Its a few extra unnecessary added steps for me and now it just clutters my Downloads Folder, especially when I forget to clear it. Is the "Print" function from this preview pane ever going to come back? Does this make it more of a security risk now that you have to download an attachment in order to print it?
The other thing that I noticed is the preview in the preview panes by default got a lot smaller and for each preview I need to manually enlarge it to see that particular email attachment. Is there a permanent fix to that as well to bring it back to normal how it used to be?
Could this have all been caused by an Recent Update?

This is a Microsoft website, so how do we get them to answer the question? I've had this issue for at least two weeks and it's very frustrating.

In addition, I can not print an email while an attachment is in preview mode. I have to close the attachment for the print window to open up to print an email - then open the attachment again to finish what I was doing.
Another issue I see recently, the attachments in an email chain use to be at the top and you could just click on it to attach to the email you are sending. Now I have to go look for the attachment and either download to attach, copy the attachment or open the email in a separate window to attach.
Whoever thinks of these updates - don't work in the real world.

As for now Downloading and Installing the Outlook for Windows App like @ Hornblower409-4652 mentioned was the only current fix. I wish the web version was fixed as for preference wise I was so used to that layout and don't care for the App layout as it is a little more confusing. But I have configured the Layout as best as I could to match my Web Version and yes, it does actually allow me to "Print" without "Downloading".

I wanted to come back and say both the office app version of outlook and the regular webmail version that used to be Hotmail are working perfectly today. PDF attachments can be printed from the preview window without downloading. Microsoft you fixed the issue so please don't mess with it anymore as it was fixed for 2 days previously and then was broken again.

Hi!sorry to hear that you have troubles with this, could you please try to open your email from Edge Browser, and also when you preview the file, on the top right corner, click on the option to open it on a different tab. Then try print again

Hi Jeronimo, Not a great solution. If you have to click the option to open in a different tab it completely defeats the purpose of the preview window!
I've had the same issue as @automotive supply. When accessing emails via outlook.office.com, the preview is so small as to be unreadable. (showing the entire document rather than the previous fit to page width. There is a very faint option to magnify, but it resets to this new default each time. Then if I want to print, it no longer takes you directly to the print dialogue. It now opens the attachment in a new tab where I then have to select print again before it takes you to the print dialogue. Is there an adjustment in settings to fix this?
I have the same issue and I am using outlook for the web not the app from office. A few weeks ago the print button in the preview banner stopped working so I had to right click to print. Then everything was back to normal for two days and now the preview is tiny and the pdf can only be printed after downloading. This is ridiculous. What happened and why does it keep changing?
What if we do not use Microsoft edge? This sounds like Microsoft trying to force Google Chrome users to switch to edge and that's shady.

I run CHROME and will not switch to EDGE- not impressed with this change either because now my download folder is fullof crap that doesnt need to be there! Microsofts HELP is just a wreck for the end users! Ya all make changes because you "think "it is what the people want- WE DO NOT!
Are there plans to fix this? This started a few weeks ago when the print button in the preview banner stopped working and I had to right click to print. Then for 2 days everything was back to normal. Now today it is awful with every pdf needing to be downloaded just so it can be printed. I get roughly 40-50 vendor invoices a day and need to print each one. I have wasted so much time today downloading things I only need to print. This is an issue in both the office app of outlook and the web version of outlook.
We / I've been using Chrome for a very long time as in the beginning Chrome would give the most pertinent information to our searches and so we have stuck with Google Chrome ever since. I have tried the advice of switching Web Browsers but have still received the same results.
The "Print" button is still unresponsive in the Edge Browser and still needs to be downloaded or saved. The preview pane in Edge is also still the same as Chrome and needs to be manually enlarged significantly to see the preview and it always resets back to the small view when opening the next email. I understand security risks and changes needed for those sorts of things, but not changes to something like this or for things that are already functioning properly.
Too bad Windows 7 is out. To me that was one of the better platforms. We (the end users) had more control over everything in that computer system. To me it was also easier to find things and settings in that system. Windows 11 changes to App style, hides everything and gives us less control just to claim that it is more user friendly. And now days you can't even turn on a Windows Computer without even having an online account so that all your personal data and information can be hacked, tracked, traced, and/or sold. To me this New Digital Age is already a mess and seems to only be getting worse.
The other thing that I hate is this AI stuff. I know AI is important and will be eventually good for the future, but companies should stop relying on them so much. Especially for Customer Service. Yes, I think that AI should be used to initially greet or at the opening greeting of Customer Service to gather needed or as much information to inform an actual Customer Service Agent. But Customer Service should not be 100% based on AI. As AI has no feelings, are taking over much needed Human Jobs and cannot solve all of our issues or answers to all of our questions.
Anyways, back to the reason why this thread was created. If anyone has a solution to the problem. Please let us know...

Today the print button in the preview window is working in my app version of outlook but not in my web version of outlook. It's like each one changes from day to day. Very annoying and again, such a waste of time.
IT's happening to me also. Microsoft has been messing with Hotmail and the view for a long time. I tried fire fox and chrome and nothing changed. I use Edge but changed everything. I took the drivers out of my printer and reinstalled it. I recovered my computer twice. Now the only solution I have is to send my clients to my Gmail account I created. I do not want these documents downloaded on my computer nor do I want a scan back to a client that is so small you can't read it. This can be fixed on it's on Microsoft's end.

I can't use Hotmail anymore because of this issue. I am using Microsoft edge and tried chrome and Fire fox NOTHING works! this change is from Microsoft and classic view worked well. Now you screwed this up very badly.
Sorry to hear that you also have this trouble in Edge, can confirm that this is currently not working from the web, but as a possible temporary fix, please try using the Outlook(new) to manage your email, as the feature works perfectly from it and you wont need to download the files to print.
What is Outlook (New)?
I use the Outlook webmail, that was formerly Hotmail and then live360 and then live, for one of my email addresses and a corporate app for the other. I can not change which app is used and I will not put my other email address on that app as they are for 2 separate companies.
I want to continue using outlook web mail not the app and just want the functionality back that it had a few weeks ago.
I have the new version of outlook it doesn't work. There is no file tab in the ribbon but thank you for trying.

Is there a Web Base Solution instead that can be used across multiple/variety of platforms instead of only using the proprietary Windows Outlook (New) App? That is what we are after... Somethings should not be changed especially if they are not broken.

A security issue? If someone hacked into my email they could download the pdf just like I can so what is the security risk of allowing a pdf to be printed before downloading?
I just found another issue. I used to be able to hover over the senders name in an email and a little pane would pop up on the side with their info and could copy their email address but that no longer works either. It's like they did an update and screwed up several outlook functions.
Well, I would think that it is more of a security issue downloading then just being able to just print it straight out. By downloading you could actually inadvertently invite malicious unknown files and links into your computer without you or your protection software (if you even have one) knowing it and by the time you know it, it may be too late to fix. And now I also have the daily job of clearing out my downloads folder such as @ CTI has because we basically have a lot of Vendor Information, Ordering, and Invoicing that comes to us that we just need printed and not digitally saved...
Yes to me having to download these documents to print them is very risky. I am trying to switch to my Gmail account now.
I agree that printing from a preview is safer than downloading it. Why can't we hear from Microsoft? I don't know who this "independent advisor" guy is.

Like I mentioned, that could be a security change, but Microsoft hasn’t officially confirmed the cause, malicious PDFs can execute embedded JavaScript, so tightening the web viewer or disabling inline print is a common mitigation; it could also be a bug, but without a Microsoft statement we can only infer. If you want to avoid the extra steps for now, the new Outlook for Windows isn’t affected by this specific web-viewer regression and printing works after opening the file, you will have the same environment and easier access.
