Essentially, opening files takes a long time and the preview page allowed to me to check files without opening them, for moving files to/from an appraisal workfile etc. Windows update just broke this. The error message I get is "The file you are attempting to preview could harm your computer. If you trust the file and the source you received it from, open it to view its contents". This pattern is common, Windows update routinely introduces user devastating bugs and efficiency downgrades, and I wish I could permanently remove Windows update functionality from my computer. Is there a fix for this windows preview bug on the horizon?

None of these fixes have worked for me. I am working on a local drive with Dropbox cloud.

Unblocking the given file allows to preview it. The method that works best for me, as described here, is to do it in bulk with PowerShell, which doesn't even require admin privileges:

    gci "path_to_the_folder_where_the_blocked_files_are" | unblock-file

If you want to unblock the files recursively in that folder and its subfolders, add the -recurse flag, that is, gci -recurse ....

In case you wonder, gci is an alias for get-childitem.

It should be upto the individual windows user if they want to block documents from being previewed and not just set in stone... Also why not get to the root of the problem and alter the specifications of PDFs and any other document type that can be used in a bad way... I am sure most users won't be affected by the changes.. And at the end of the day, is it not most users that count?
