I did have a surface rt, but upgraded to a surface pro.  I didn't know, but a pen came with the pro.  I kept the mouse from the rt, because the best buy guy stated it would work with the pro....ok, I wanted that.   I have been trying everything to get this mouse to be recognized by the pro, but nothing works.  I cannot get the pro to recognized the mouse at all.......I am at my wit's end.  Please can some one help me?  I just want to use the mouse?   Thank you for any suggestions, I will try.......

The only thing I can think of that you haven't tried (or maybe did, but didn't mention trying) is a long press of the mouse power button on the bottom, not just the 'tap' to turn it on.  The long press should set it to searching for something to connect to.

According to this page (scroll down a bit) you need to hold the button 3-5 seconds to go to pairing mode.

    http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/touch-mouse-and-search/touch-mouse

After it's been paired, in the future, you can just 'tap' the mouse button and it should auto-connect if the Surface is nearby and on.

Otherwise, your sequence seems perfect.  I wouldn't worry about lack of Windows fluency....the steps to pair a device are pretty universal among phones, car hands-free electronics, Mac/Windows, etc.  Turn one on, get it looking for devices, turn the other on / get it 'broadcasting' its ID for pairing, then confirm on the first device and hope they finish the handshaking on their own. ;)

Yes.  This is the KEY ANSWER.  Make sure you hold the power button down as soon as you click the "Pair" button in the Bluetooth pairing process.  I had not used my surface for several weeks and ran into the mouse problem after the unit had "updated" files over a half-hour of uploading etc. so assume some major updates took place which affected the mouse connection.

I am having  the same problem with a Surface Pro 2 (running 8.1) and a wedge mouse. Here is what I did

    • swiped from the right, clicked "Settings" and clicked "Change PC Settings"
    • I opened Bluetooth tab and Bluetooth is turned on.
    • There is a message that says "Your PC is searching for and can be discovered by Bluetooth devices"
    • I turned on the wedge mouse; the blue light is blinking

However, the mouse never shows up.

Alternatively, I went to the Control Panel and from there chose "Add Bluetooth device"; the PC is searching but the wedge never shows up.

I am not very fluent in Windows; the rest of my environment is Mac -- Surface Pro 2 is my only windows machine. So, it is possible that I am doing something wrong and would very much appreciate assistance.

    Thanks.

I have tried the solutions and directions given to me, and no the mouse STILL does NOT work with the new surface pro unit.......I have even taken it back to the store, the guy at the store did get it to work in the store, BUT when I took it back home........it stopped working and I can't get it to begin again?????  I am taking it back to the store again and try one more time......This is a HUGE disappointment in Microsoft, Windows......and any thing associated with them for me.......I have used their products forever, and have NEVER had such bad, really bad.......service from their products.   I am greatly unhappy with their new surface, and wedge mouse.   And to think.....Delta is giving all their pilots surface's to use.  I don't think I will be flying on Delta either.....I want to get to where I am going?  If a simple user like me can't get a little mouse to work, what will happen in the air?   Common people, it is just a mouse?   And I am not that dumb!!!!  I have used many different types of computers, and software for many years.

What menus or selections have you tried?  What did the guy at the store do, and did he do it on your Surface or another one in store (e.g. did you only take the mouse in)?  Did you try to repeat what he did or just turn the mouse back on after returning home?

What have you seen in the device listing, either during or after a connection attempt?  Does the mouse show up but never connect, or just never show up? When you hit the button on the mouse does the blue light turn on blinky or solid?

Does any entry show up in your device manager listing?  Perhaps multiple entries?

Believe it or not we are trying to help you, but you just say it isn't working and don't give us much to go by other than just 'guess' that you didn't know the right menu selection to go to.  OK, you're smart, you knew how it was 'supposed' to work...at what point in the procedure did it deviate from the expected?

I have "tried" ALL of the solutions that EVERY one has sent to me from this "community" response system and none of them have worked.  I did take the surface and my wedge mouse to the store. the guy at the store worked with the same things I did.  Now the mouse does show an option to connect, but it only blinks a red light once when the computer is "looking" for a device to "connect" to. I did repeat what the guy in the store did and it did not work at home. the mouse nevers shows up....just the offer to connect the mouse.  The mouse does not show up in my mangers listing....no entries that I can see.  I do believe you are trying to help me, but you are addressing me as if I am stupid!.  The point the procedure deviated from the expected is:  "when I upgraded to the surface pro?"   and yes, I am considering a bigger hammer!!!!!  I am not giving up, but this is beginning to be too much .......I'm thinking I should have went with an Ipad, like I started too, but I have always been a loyal Microsoft/windows user and I really hate to leave them....but nothing should be this difficult!!!!
